How to export an address book

Outlook Express 5 and 6

Outlook Express address books use a .wab file for saving email addresses and other information.

  1. Open Outlook Express.
  2. Click File on the menu and select Export then Address Book...
  3. Select the type of file or program you want to export your address book to and click Export:

    1. Export from Outlook to Outlook Express
If you want to export the address book from Outlook Express to Outlook, select the Microsoft Exchange Personal Address Book. This will automatically export address book to Outlook but will only work if a "Personal Address Book" service is set up in the Outlook profile and that it is set up for use as the current Address book. You may also receive an Outlook login prompt during this operation if Outlook is not running.

    2. Export as text file to import to E-mail Programs or Excel
If you want to save the address book as a Text File (Comma Separated Values) or "csv" file so that other programs, including email programs and Excel, can import and parse the data, click the Browse... button to select the location where the file will be saved (e.g. your desktop). Type in a name for the file and then click Save. Click Next. Click to select the check boxes for the fields that you want to export. Click Finish.

  8. Printing a document using the Generic printer will bring up the "Print to File" dialogue box. Save the file as a *.prn file (plain text file).
  9. To print, open the Netscape addrses book (select a single entry or select all by pressing Ctrl+A). The Print to File dialogue box will appear, requesting that you to save the file as a *.prn file. The files can be combined and edited and made into a comma-delimited or .ldif address book file. The comma-delimted of .ldif file can then be imported into Netscape Communicator or Outlook Express by using the COPY command from an MS-DOS command prompt in the format: copy *.prn filename
