Uninstall and reinstall DUN - Windows 98

This page describes how to uninstall and reinstall Dial-Up Networking.

Before you begin...

Changing the Windows Network settings may require the original Windows installation CD or disks, or Windows system source (cabinet) files on the computer's hard drive. Mojave Mesa cannot be held responsible for any problems with the Windows Network configurations if these items are required but are not supplied at the time of configuration.

Uninstall Dial-Up Networking

  1. Remove the Connectoids in the Dial-Up Networking folder and any Shortcuts to Connectoids on the Desktop.
  2. Remove Network Components

    1. Go to Start, Settings and click Control Panel.

    2. Double-click the Network Control Panel.

    3. Remove Dial-Up Adapater and TCP/IP.

    4. Click OK. Click No to the prompt to restart the machine.

  3. Double-click My Computer.

  4. Double-click Control Panel.

  5. Double-click Add-Remove Programs.

  6. Click on the Windows Setup tab.

  7. Select Communications and click the Details... button.

  8. Remove the check from Dial-Up Networking . Click OK and OK again. The files will be removed.

  9. Once this step is complete, the customer will get a message stating that the computer should be restarted and will be taken back to the Control Panel. Leave the Control Panel open and restart the machine.

Install/Reinstall Dial-Up Networking

This step will add both the dial-up networking and the TCP/IP stack. It will also add a new winsock.dll

  1. Double-click My Computer.

  2. Double-click Control Panel.

  3. Double-click Add-Remove Programs.

  4. Click on the Windows Setup tab.

  5. Select Communications and click the Details... button.

  6. Place a checkmark in Dial-Up Networking. Click OK and OK again.

During the installation, if you receive a message that "A file being copied is older than the one...Do you want to keep the existing file?". Click NO to each so that ALL files will be replaced (one of these files may be corrupted).

  7. Do NOT restart the machine before checking the configuration of the Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP settings in the Network Control Panel.

  8. Check Configuration of Network Components

    1. Double-click the Network Control Panel in the Control Panel.

    2. Check the Dial-Up Adapater and TCP/IP Properties. The Primary Network Logon should be Client for Microsoft Networks (preferred) or Windows Family Logon.

  9. After you have checked these settings and added components if necessary, click OK to to restart the machine. Re/configure the computer to dial a connection to Mojave Mesa either by making a new connection in Dial-Up Networking or use the Internet Connection Wizard.

Note: If you receive a Windows Logon (prompt for password) after rebooting, type your Mojave Mesa dial-up username in the username field, LEAVE THE PASSWORD FIELD BLANK and click OK. Click OK again if a confirmation for the password (which is blank) appears. The Windows Logon will NOT appear again (one time deal).

Help us help you! If you contact Mojave Mesa support for assistance please write down any error messages you get when trying to connect to the Internet. Include the name and version of your operating system and the exact text of all error messages. If this information is included in an online case submission or provided to a support representative, it will greatly speed up the troubleshooting process.

Please be aware that some troubleshooting may require uninstallation and reinstallation of operating system files. To ensure that this type of troubleshooting can be accomplished if required, please be sure that you have to have original Operating System CD or Operating system source files on disk on hand.
